June 2017

The summer is in full swing and the water gets busy with boats right after July 4th. The first 15 days of July are very popular because after the 15th we will have the inside closure for Chinook salmon over 77cm. After this date, you can retain coho wild or hatchery and Chinook under 77cm. For large Chinook, you need to be one mile past the surf line that runs from Tatchu Point across to Ferrer Point.

Inside the surfline Ferrer Point, Pin Rock and Catala Island are all good spots to try. At first light and for the evening bite, Rosa Harbor can be productive as well. Trolling depths from 20 to 70- feet will be the best bet. Anchovy and herring trolled behind a flasher on 5-7 foot leaders seem to be more productive than lures most of the time.

Coyote and Titan spoons will produce fish as well. Needlefish are the main source of food still so small baits and lures will produce the best. Squirts in army truck, purple haze and green splatter back are all worth trying. Coho killer spoons have been taking a lot of big Chinook as well. Top teaser head colors are purple haze, Betsey, chartreuse, red crome and silver blue. Some other good spoons are army truck, Kermit and nasty boy. The coho have shown up by now and are usually found just outside the regular Chinook spots. Head off the beach a few hundred yards and pick up the speed an extra knot or 2. At the time of writing these are the regulations, but always check before heading out. Inside the surf line you are allowed to keep four coho wild or hatchery.

Outside the surfline you can keep four coho hatchery only until September first and after September first you are allowed to retain four coho of which two can be wild.
