Coastal BC Fisheries Management: Your Voice Heard

The waters surrounding our island are more than just a stunning backdrop; they are the lifeblood of a vibrant sport fishing community. From the thrill of the strike to the satisfaction of a successful day on the water, recreational angling holds significant economic, social, and cultural value for many who call Coastal British Columbia home. Recently, Island Fisherman magazine reached out to you, our readers, to gauge your perspectives on the management of these precious fisheries.  Your responses, insightful and often passionate, have now been tallied, offering a compelling snapshot of how the sport fishing community views its importance, and the current political management by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

Topics of the survey included:

  • Mass Marking (MM)
  • Mark Selective Fisheries (MSF)
  • Science & Politics
  • Fishing Regulations
  • Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI)
  • Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW)
  • Hatchery Based Salmon Enhancement
  • Pinniped Control Measures
  • and more

Below are the results of that survey, shedding light on sport anglers’ priorities, concerns, and hopes for the future of angling in our coastal waters.

These results appeared in the March/April issue of Island Fisherman magazine and can be downloaded as a PDF here.
