Dr. Richard (Dick) Beamish, C.M., O.B.C., Ph.D., is an internationally renowned fisheries scientist and Emeritus Scientist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo. A Member of the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, he served as Director of the Pacific Biological Station from 1980 to 1993 and has published over 350 scientific papers on fish aging, climate impacts, and Pacific salmon ocean survival. His research spearheaded the International Year of the Salmon high-seas expeditions in the Gulf of Alaska. Writing for Island Fisherman Magazine, Dr. Beamish provides foundational scientific insights on wild salmon ecology, marine survival, and coastal fisheries management.
