Salmon Conservation in Nootka Sound & Esperanza Inlet

The Nootka Sound Watershed Society (NSWS) is a dedicated group of local community members, First Nations representatives, elected officials, biologists, commercial fishermen, sport anglers, educators, and stewards. Together, they share one vital, common goal: to see a healthy, sustainable revival of wild salmon stocks throughout the Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet watersheds.

As a community-led organization, the NSWS is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and backed by over 200 passionate members from all walks of life. The Board meets monthly to discuss critical regional initiatives, including salmon conservation, habitat enhancement, stream restoration, stock assessment, environmental stewardship, and sustainable economic development pertaining to Pacific Salmon species.

Community-Led Stewardship and Practical Science

The NSWS strives to provide an inclusive, respectful, and community-based forum to effectively address both ecological and economic issues surrounding wild salmon recovery. Their diverse projects span hands-on salmon enhancement, habitat restoration, and practical field science. Every project is carried out in close partnership with local Indigenous Nations, coastal industries, regional partners, and dedicated volunteers.

From community-volunteer fish counting and river monitoring to broodstock collection, riparian tree planting, and major heavy-machinery habitat reconstruction projects, the NSWS is actively working on the ground for Vancouver Island salmon recovery.

The society remains deeply grateful to its First Nation partners, industry stakeholders, tireless volunteers, passionate Board, funders, donors, and community supporters. It is through this collaborative local effort that we can make a measurable difference for Pacific Salmon for generations to come.
