Family and Fishing: Smiles, Laughter, and Fun

In a world where family life is often filled with stress, rush, and little quality time, a family vacation can take parents and kids out of the daily routine and into a place of relaxed fun and adventure.

Adventure in Nootka Sound

Vancouver Island has a multitude of opportunities for family vacations, but have you heard about Nootka Sound? The gorgeous location on the west coast of Vancouver Island is only a 2-hour drive west of Campbell River through Strathcona Provincial Park. Nootka Marine Adventures’ Moutcha Bay Resort is nestled at the top of Nootka Sound and offers a wide variety of family-friendly accommodation options from serviced campsites to yurts and lodge suites.

Sharing With a New Generation

Many of us seasoned anglers first experienced the thrill of the bite during a family fishing trip. It was during these trips that, as first-timers, we learned how to operate a rod and reel, tie a knot, hook bait, cast a rod, and take the fish off the hook. But we also learned about patience, problem-solving, environmental cues, fish species and lifecycles, friendly competition, and bonding with our family. Some of our best childhood memories were made on the water with our parents while jigging a fishing rod! If you didn’t learn to love fishing as a child, that’s OK!

Angler’s Academy at Nootka Marine Adventures

If your family is new to fishing, Nootka Marine Adventures is inviting all ages to participate in their new Angler’s Academy program. The fun new program is geared toward families who are looking to get into fishing for the first time, or to enhance their skills. Most importantly, it is about smiles, laughter, and fun!

Sign up for the Angler’s Academy and learn to love fishing for the first time as an adult.

An Immersive Experience

The Angler’s Academy program is a hands-on immersive experience for families looking to share these valuable skills with a new generation of youth. The basics of all types of angling are taught by friendly, experienced guides aboard large, comfortable North River vessels—enough room for the whole family with heads on board and all gear and equipment provided. Participants try their hand at jigging (or vertical fishing) where they learn to feel the lure drop and the fish strike, and get to experience the thrill of catching fish of all sizes and species—all first-hand!

Fish Where the Fish Are

There are only a handful of places on the west coast of Vancouver Island where you can fish sheltered tidal waters with easy drive-in access. Nootka Sound is truly an angler’s paradise with your choice of calm-water fishing locations, a huge abundance of large salmon, and incredible scenery to soak in. There are also plenty of halibut, rockfish, and lingcod. With close proximity to Brooks Peninsula and protection from the predominantly northwest summer weather systems, Nootka Sound enjoys many calm and sunny on-the-water days.

Supporting the Salmon

Nootka Marine Adventures understands that increasing knowledge of our ecosystem through thoughtful teaching and hands-on-learning is paramount to the survival of both the salmon and the sport. That’s why Nootka Marine Adventures launched the Angler’s Academy, and why we continue to support local enhancement programs. The Conuma River Hatchery is now one of the most successful enhancement programs on the west coast of B.C. with 3.5 million juvenile Chinook released every year. The Conuma River brings life to Nootka Sound year-round, with large runs of Chinook, coho, and chum salmon returning to the calm waters of Nootka Sound from spring to fall. With little to no impact on stocks of concern, this resource provides anglers of all ages with easy access to one of the greatest saltwater fisheries in the world.
